Delegate Kristen J. Amundson 709 General Assembly Building Richmond, VA 23218 May 8, 2001 Dear Secretary Norton: On behalf of my constituents who use Belle Haven Marina, I urge you to bring the existing facility into compliance with health and safety requirements and forgo any plans that would eliminate or enlarge the marina. I am disturbed that none of the alternatives discussed in your "Public Scoping" newsletter of March 2001 appear to support leaving this facility with its current services and number of boat slips. The marina allows families in my district boating access to the beauty of the Potomac River and adjacent Dyke Marsh. The concession has enabled countless people-including youngsters and seniors-- to learn windsurfing and sailing skills through cooperation with the Fairfax Recreation Department. There is no nearby, alternative access to the river for people of ordinary means. I emphasize that the Belle Haven Marina is for everyday families. If you visit there on any summer weekend you will see this to be true. Belle Haven Marina has become part of the fabric of the nearby community. It is a small, family-oriented facility. It is part of the history and natural beauty of the George Washington Parkway. Before the current contract expires on December 31, I urge you to expend the federal funds for necessary repairs to the facility. Above all, I urge you to maintain Belle Haven Marina's existing services for the families in my district. Sincerely, Delegate Kristen J. Amundson |
